About the album
An extraordinary formation, nominated for the 2011 Fryderyk Award, returns with a superb new album.
Perpendicular Realities is a natural continuation of the thinking behind New Trio's first album, Simultaneous Abstractions. Stylistically the new record sits somewhere between European improvised music, free jazz and rock — all of it deeply rooted in the tradition of American jazz. The band plays its own compositions and, with remarkable chemistry and understanding, ventures into territory of total improvisation (some of the pieces on this album, as on the first, came into being exactly that way).
New Trio has existed since 2009 and has appeared many times on the most important stages of Poland, Ukraine and Russia. It is made up of musicians who perform with leading figures of world jazz. For this project the Smoczyński brothers invited the most distinguished Russian drummer, Alexander Zinger. The group's concerts are always an exceptional event, with full houses and an enthusiastic audience. From this year on, listeners will have the rare chance to hear the phenomenal sound of an original 1960s Hammond organ.
Mateusz Smoczyński (violin):
Currently living in San Francisco, where for several months he has been first violinist of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet. Co-founder of Atom String Quartet. A superb improviser and soloist whose playing has graced the albums of many eminent musicians.
Jan Smoczyński (Hammond organ):
Musical director of Urszula Dudziak's band, co-founder of the group June, pianist, producer and recording engineer. A Kayax artist. He has had the pleasure of performing with outstanding artists (A.M. Jopek, E. Bem, G. Auguścik, L. Szafran, Aga Zaryan, R. Bona, M. Cinelu, D. Youssef, M. Urbaniak, T. Szukalski, T. Stańko, Zb. Namysłowski, J. Muniak, H. Miśkiewicz and others).
Alexander Zinger (drums):
The most sought-after and most highly regarded Russian drummer. Extraordinarily versatile, which has led to work with stars such as Roy Hargrove, David Sanchez and Deborah Brown.
