SUMMARY:Atom String Quartet | Monterey Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:Atom String Quartet is one of the most intriguing string quartets in the world\, and also one of the best Polish jazz bands. The group combines the capabilities of a string quartet with improvisation in its broad sense. Its music output\, besides jazz\, shows sources of inspiration coming from Polish folk\, music of various regions of the world\, also contemporary and classical music. \nThe quartet was established in Warsaw in 2010 and is created by the violinists: Dawid Lubowicz and Mateusz Smoczyński\, the violist – Michał Zaborski and cellist – Krzysztof Lenczowski. All musicians received a thorough classical education – they are graduates of the Warsaw Chopin University of Music. They all compose and successfully lead their own solo projects. Since winning the Grand Prix of the 13th Bielska Zadymka Jazz Festival in 2011\, the band constantly performs at the greatest Polish and international music stages. \nThe group recorded five original records\, two of which received the Polish music award “Fryderyk”. Their last CD – PENDERECKI was released in 2019; it contains the quartet’s own arrangements for an improvising string quartet of Krzysztof Penderecki’s compositions. In 2021\, the album Karłowicz Recomposed was released\, recorded at the invitation of Dorota Serwa – Director of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin\, together with the Szczecin Philharmonic Wind Quartet – a group of soloists of that institution. The album includes Karłowicz’s songs arranged for an improvising string quartet and a woodwind quartet. The authors of the arrangements are ASQ musicians\, and the publisher of the album is Mieczysław Karłowicz Szczecin Philharmonic. In 2022 the album Essencewas released\, which is a record of more than ten years of the ensamble`s history\, featuring new versions of songs from previous albums and 3 compositions recorded for the first time. The publisher of the album is Requiem Records. \nIn March 2021\, the Atom String Quartet together with pianist Hania Rani performed Max Richter’s “Testament.” The composition commissioned by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute was written and dedicated to performers as a tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki\, who died in 2020. The premiere of the piece was recorded by Polish Television’s Kultura Channel. \nThe musicians of the Atom String Quartet are regularly invited to participate in recording sessions of other musicians\, they cooperate with the leading Polish and foreign artists and orchestras.
