Dear Listeners,
You are holding an album of twenty Polish Christmas carols in the arrangements of Witold Lutosławski. The cycle, originally written for voice and piano, is heard here for the first time in a version for string quartet. We have taken care that our interpretation should bring out the folk character of the work and leave room for a personal reading of favourite carols and pastorals. Bold arranging decisions and rich harmonies laid over simple melodies, deeply rooted in the common memory, bring out the festive atmosphere of music-making at home, full of both the joy and the reflection that accompany Christmas.
We would like our carols to carry you into a fairy-tale world straight out of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" or Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol". Lutosławski's masterly arrangements inspired us to read these melodies, which we all know so well, in just such a magical way.
We hope this album will find a place in your homes for many years and become an inseparable part of the season.
