In recent years Mateusz Smoczyński has devoted himself to composition that resists easy classification, bringing together symphonic music, jazz and improvisation. The orchestra is treated classically in these works, and the improvisation is not an afterthought — it is written into the structure of the piece.
He is the author of five violin concertos with orchestra, among them “Adam’s Apple” for violin and baritone violin, “2PiX” for violin and saxophone, performed together with Branford Marsalis, and “Fallen Angel”, written for Janusz Olejniczak. His most recent work is “Biesy” (The Possessed) — a first symphony for large orchestra, inspired by the novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Winner of the 2025 Fryderyk Award for Jazz Composer of the Year.
